BRACKET NOTES
Teams are selected, seeded, and bracketed as if today is Selection Sunday.

As I write this today, we are less than 32 hours away from the Selection Show. Can you believe it? In many ways this week has been long. The individual days of Thursday and Friday provided us with over 14 hours each of non-stop critical basketball games. They are long days. However, this week still always amazes me how fast it seems upon reflection. I feel that feeling again today as we are down to just a few semifinals and championship games left. The majority of programs have wrapped up their work for the year. The moral here I think, is to treasure each game of Championship Week - it disappears quickly.

- Virginia and Kansas both had to withdraw from their respective conference tournaments dur to Covid-19 issues. By the end of the day yesterday, both had said they still fully plan to field a team in next week’s NCAA Tournament. The NCAA has two deadlines coming up for such teams. The first is tonight to allow the committee enough notice to withdraw (unlikely to occur now). The next deadline will be on Tuesday at 6PM EST. Should the Jayhawks, Cavs, or any other team collect further positive tests - we would likely see one of the alternate teams taking their place in the bracket. Certainly hoping to see the best tournament possible, so let’s hope KU and UVA are able to field a team and compete.

- In the protected seed area, Oklahoma State vaulted all the way up to the final two-seed today after one of the best performances all season in the sport - handling Baylor by nine on a neutral court. The Cowboys are not a slam dunk yet for a two-seed. They have to play Texas today for the tournament title, a win helps solidify it. Oklahoma State is in competition with Houston and Arkansas who are also still fighting in their tournaments. I believe the committee will make their final call on this tonight, so it is Oklahoma State’s to lose. The final three-seed is difficult. I still prefer West Virginia’s body of work compared to Kansas. The two teams split head-to-head, I like WV’s edge in the quadrant breakdown - I think its favorable. KU’s win over Baylor makes it interesting, but that did lose just a tad of luster with Baylor’s second loss yesterday.

- Colorado beat USC for the third time last night, despite a feverish rally late from the Trojans. CU and USC have comparable resumes, with the Buffs having some outliers for losses. But with three head-to-head wins now, I feel comfortable leaving Colorado above USC until were done tomorrow. Should the Buffs win the Pac-12 Tournament today, there is a good chance they will take the last five-seed. For today, CU/USC are both on the six-line

- Loyola-Chicago continues to benefit in seeding discussions for that seven-seed they so desperately want. The Ramblers may have the largest range of possibilities on Sunday. Resume-wise the committee could slot them down to a 10 or even 11 seed. But the metrics are completely behind the Ramblers in a big way. It is not apples to apples, but Wofford had very strong metrics in 2019 and landed as a seven-seed. In this hour, that’s where I have Loyola.

- The most fascinating story today is the bubble of course. Hopefully you’ve seen my bid thief board updates on Twitter as Championship Week has progressed. Georgetown and Oregon State each have the opportunity to take away bids with a win today. Utah State has the chance to “leave no doubt” with a win today. And in the AAC, both Memphis and Cincinnati are inching closer to stealing a bid. The teams right on the cut-line: Syracuse, Colorado State, Ole Miss and Saint Louis are currently in debates over two spots. Well, all of them could be doomed with those precious last two spots eaten by outsiders like the Hoyas and Beavers. If we remain in the same position, I have CSU penciled into last team in position. I still see the case for Ole Miss and Saint Louis (unique circumstances could warrant first four opportunity).

- I have more work to do in the 13-16 seed area. A lot of new faces emerged and some deeper comparisons are going to be done today. Look for some tweaks potentially by tomorrow.

Time is ticking quickly in the Bracketology world. The selection committee’s process of balloting began yesterday and for many schools, today may be the last major day of significance into what ultimately becomes of the final landing spot in the bracket. The committee has already selected 25 teams on their initial ballots. Another 46 are under consideration for various reasons, this includes a handful of one-bid league champions (like Liberty and UNC-Greensboro for example). A handful of the 46 teams teams will ultimately become automatic qualifiers this week, all others will fall into the at-large pool.

For the past five years or so, I’ve had the privledge to serve on a mock selection committe with our friends at HoopsHD.com. We carefully follow the committee’s process step-by-step. The purpose of this exercise is to go through and experience what is being discussed about teams, and what is not. It’s a tremendous experience for independent bracket forecasters. At the end of the day - all NCAA Tournament selection and seeding decisions are done as a group, not an individual. Not me, not Lunardi, not Palm, but a group of mostly experienced leaders in college sports that make up this committee. In order for me to maintain accurate forecasting, I must always live in that mindset of group-think.

Today is an essepecially important day for certain teams:

  • Michigan State vs. Maryland. My big question comes if Maryland loses. The Terps are currently 14-12 vs. D1 competition, a loss leaves them just one game above .500. If my research is correct, the last team to get in just two games above .500 was 2001 Georgia. I am fairly certain that no team just one game over .500 has been selected. None of this necessarily disqualifies Maryland with a loss today, but it does put them on the immediate hot seat. The simple path would be to just beat the Spartans to make this a non-issue during a Covid year and shortened season.

  • Syracuse vs. Virginia. The Orange have a shot here. Playing real well in their past few outings and creeping closer to the cut-line. A win today would help significantly as it would give Syracuse a win away from the Carrier Dome with real substance.

  • Seton Hall vs. St. John’s. Both teams are looking to make a run to the finals and are likely fortunate to be on the same half of the bracket as shorthanded Villanova. Red Storm won this same matchup this past Saturday. Today’s losing team will likely be left out of the field.

  • Nevada vs. Boise State. The Broncos were swept at Nevada not long ago. Here we are again with another matchup in Las Vegas to open the tournament. Boise State’s loss to Fresno State put them in a dangerous position to be excluded. Broncos likely need to solve Nevada today to feel even moderately okay on Sunday.

  • Duke is rumored to be out of the ACC Tournament due to a Covid-19 positive test. If so, a strange season for the Blue Devils comes to an abrupt end today. They needed to beat Florida State for any chance of inclusion. Unfortunately they won’t get the opportunity it appears. And in all liklihood the Blue Devils will turn down an NIT offer.

BRACKET NOTES

- Today begins the Championship bubble action. We are already seeing Syracuse put up an impressive opener against NC State. Later today, Xavier will be in must-win mode against Butler and Louisville will take on Duke. We also have long shots like Duke, Stanford and Providence on the court today looking to string together amazing runs.

- Five more tickets were punched last night. Drexel, Oral Roberts and Mount St. Mary’s are programs who were pretty much off the radar all season, and got hot when it mattered most - in March.

BRACKET NOTES
Teams are selected, seeded, and bracketed as if today is Selection Sunday.

- In the protected seed area, Oklahoma State vaulted all the way up to the ninth team on the seed list. The collection of road wins over Texas Tech, West Virginia, Oklahoma and Wichita State are very impressive. The Cowboys also have nine wins against the field, second highest total overall (only behind Iowa’s 10). The only thing holding them back is being swept by TCU. Also in the Big 12, Texas took an unexpected leap up to the final three-seed position. Texas has a sweep over Kansas and the Longhorns grade out well in the quadrant breakdowns when compared to the Jayhawks directly.

- Florida State’s loss at Notre Dame resulted in the Seminoles losing out on the ACC regular season championship and Virginia seized the title later that day at Louisville. The combination of those results and a reevaluation of the body of work, tells me that Virginia belongs as the last protected seed today.

- Loyola-Chicago’s Ramblers are the Arch Madness Champions. The Ramblers handled their business with relative ease in St. Louis over the weekend. They look more and more like a first ballot (top 32) selection to me. They are beloved by two metrics, NET and KenPom. A seven-seed is possible. I have them as a safe eight-seed for today, with the upside to move up with a little help.

- St. Bonaventure has arrived into the In Safely tier and the resume continues to strenghten. The Bonnies have the opportunity to earn another win over VCU and claim the conference double - regular season and tournament. They are sitting prettier than ever as a nine-seed today.

- The last selection took me almost all morning to get to the answer. Today, it belongs to Ole Miss. The Rebels have done the most damage away from home of the cluster of bubble teams (see first eight teams out). The good news for all the teams fighting to get in, there is still hope. If you are Saint Louis, you need a non-confernce game or a ton of help and some luck with no bid steals. St. John’s has some decent road work achieved with the UConn win, but the other metrics are not there and they have the Quad 4 loss to DePaul, which is troublesome. Utah State does not own a road win better than against #183 NET. Xavier has nothing better on the road than a win over #119 NET. There are dead ends with most of these resumes, and a bid thief or two would help tremendously.
